Sculpture: Win Screen

Creative duo Lars Marcus Vedeler and Theo Tveterås of Oslo, Norway have come together to form the experimental design team Skrekkøgle.
"We don’t think of ourselves as artists, as we come from a product/interaction design background. What we see ourselves as is a studio that does what it very well pleases, experimenting with products and electronics and the like, not necessarily being tied to a client."
A number of their projects have bounced around the blogs lately, my favorite being this hilarious three-dimensional sculpture of the win screen for Windows Solitaire. Also check out their exceedingly clever big money project that makes nearby objects look tiny by placing them next to an enormous replica of the 50 Euro cent piece and photographing them using using tilt-shift photography. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Fresh Take: Klingon Monopoly

Play Monopoly the Klingon way - bloodletting, rituals, and guttural noises. The Klingon limited edition will have just 1,701 editions is limited to just 1,701 pieces, and they are only available for pre-order up to September 30th from USAopoly.

The individual pieces are yet to be unveiled but a lot of work has gone into crafting the game pieces. The limited edition will include a 1/6th scale Chancellor’s Cane as seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, a carefully carved Birds of Prey, and a Klingon Empire proclamation.

Fresh Take: Fallout Monopoly

This is a gift for my boyfriend. I spend a lot of time making the board and all cards in the Fallout style... The board was printed on a 50 x 50 cm PVC plate. Every street is a location from the Fallout game. "GO" is now "G.O.A.T." and "free parking" is the "please stand by" screen. You can find the complete board here.

Every card has one of the Fallout3 or Fallout New Vegas perks on it and has a really cool old playing card image on the back. You can find examples for the red cardset here and the blue cardset here.

Event: Lightsaber Battle NYC 2011

Photos by Patrick Shyu

Lori Kufner and Kevin Bracken, co-founders of urban art events collective, Newmindspace, will once again be hosting the geektastic Lightsaber Battle NYC, September 24, 2011 in downtown New York City.

The event started out using dayglo painted cardboard tubes but has now graduated to color-changing LED lightsabers. These Lightsabers can be reserved prior to the event for $5.00 each. The event is free but the organizers warn that the lightsabers sold out before the event last year. If you’ll be in the area, be sure to RSVP at their Facebook page.

Photography: BeetleCam

BeetleCam is a homemade gadget that allowed two British brothers (Matthew and William Burrard-Lucas) to bring you stunning images of Africa's most dangerous wildlife. The spectacular closeups of lion prides, elephant herds and huge cape buffalo's were all made possible by the remote-controlled gizmo who trundled around the roughly-terrained bush of Katavi National Park in Tanzania.

Posters: Twenty-Five Years Of Mario Dying

25 Years Of Dying by TheBourgyman

So as you know, Mario celebrated his 25th year among us sometime in late 2010 (even though he was actually created 4 years earlier for the arcade game Donkey Kong... 25 years of independence would be more appropriate, haha, but I digress). I wanted to do something big for the occasion, but I technically missed the boat by a few months. Technically, but not practically, because well, Mario didn't turn 26 just yet.

So this poster-like illustration is my official tribute to him for the occasion. 25 years of video gaming, 25 years of dying in all sorts of crazy ways. I didn't cover everything of course, but the most important is there. If I get enough ideas for a 2nd part, I might just as well do a second one (hint hint, guys).

Yup, there's a BIT of blood here and there (hard to spot though, I actually painted it black, haha). So to those who might be offended by the picture, I ask you: how the hell have you been able to play Mario games this far??? There's some seriously violent deaths in these games when you think of it...

Video: Magnetic Ferro Fluids

Kim Pimmel has posted several magnetic short films that he calls “analog generative experiments.” In the first one (above), “ferrous printer toner particles floating on the surface of water are attracted by a magnet and align to the invisible magnetic field around them.” The resulting patterns and textures are incredible.

In the second clip, Pimmel combined dish soap bubbles with exotic ferrofluid liquid and filmed it with a macro lens to create some astonishing effects. It's hard to believe, but neither of these videos was digitally manipulated.

Sculpture: Edouard Martinet's Upcycling

http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqpkiupsfc1qae9seo1_500.jpg

French sculptor Edouard Martinet of Sladmore Gallery in London transforms discarded junk parts he finds at flea-markets and car boot sales like old bicycles, cars, and mopeds into these anatomically correct representations of amphibians, birds, insects and sea life. Martinet "upcycles" refuse such as rusted car lights, kitchen pans, typewriter keys, and other scrap metals without the use of solder, fitting each piece into place like a puzzle. Check out the entire gallery of upcycled gadget sculptures and at My Modern Metropolis.

Project: Japan Earthquake Relief

Shortly after the Japan earthquake the nonprofit Bezos Family Foundation invited children from around the world to mail origami cranes to its Seattle headquarters, promising to donate $2 per crane to the relief efforts, up to to $200,000. A few days later a truck arrived filled with thousands of cranes. And then another truck. And then another. Eventually over 2,000,000 cranes arrived at the steps of the non-profit and the organization doubled its donation. Now, Brooklyn-based Brazilian artist Vik Muniz has been tasked with taking the cranes and making something incredible with them. Above, an image from the New York Times Magazine shows the progress of his meta paper crane mosaic made of paper cranes made from math homework, hall passes, love letters, Saran wrap, Kleenex, candy wrappers, and restaurant menus. Astounding!

Photography: Private Moon

Private Moon” series by Leonid Tishkov
Tishkov writes: “Private Moon” is a visual poem telling the story of a man who met the Moon and stayed with her for the rest of his life. In the upper world, in fact in the attic of his own house, he saw the Moon falling off from the sky. Once she was hiding from the Sun in a dark and damp tunnel. But the passing trains frightened her. Now she came to this man’s house. Having wrapped the Moon with warm blankets he treated her with autumn apples, gave her a cup of tea, and when she got well he took her in his boat across the dark river to the high bank overgrown with moon pine-trees. He descended into the lower world dressed in the clothes of his deceased father and then returned from there lighting up his path with his personal Moon. Crossing the borderline between the two worlds across a narrow bridge, immersed in a dream and taking care of this heavenly creature, the man became a mythological being living in a real world as in a fairytale.

Short Film: Robots of Brixton

Robots are rioting on the streets of south London in this movie by architecture graduate Kibwe Tavares of Factory Fifteen. The movie mixes animation with architectural drawing, overlaid with photographs from the Brixton riots of the early 1980s. In the film, Brixton has degenerated into a disregarded area inhabited by London's new robot workforce - robots built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline. The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981.
